ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT

Assessment
Completing an occupational therapy assessment is the first step in the process to helping your child. This will allow me to identify the underlying sensory and motor causes for the difficulties your child is having, and to plan a bespoke therapy program for him.
The assessment normally consists of a combination of standardised tests and questionnaires, clinical observation of how your child manages certain tasks, and speaking with those who know your child well including you as parents, your child's teacher, and of course your child himself. If appropriate I may also observe how your child manages amongst his peers in class and during playtimes at school.
Following the assessment I will provide you with a report and my recommendations, and give you the opportunity to discuss this with me.
I have various assessment packages depending on your needs, so please get in touch and I will send you some more information.
Treatment
Once we have agreed our therapy goals, I will work with your child on a 1-to-1 basis either at my therapy room in Milton Keynes or at his school, depending on your circumstances and what I deem the most beneficial for his progress. I normally liaise directly with schools in case of the latter.
When planning and providing therapy sessions, I use a number of therapy approaches and techniques. This eclectic approach allows me to put your child first, and make sessions fun and engaging. Whenever appropriate I ask you to observe the sessions, so that you can repeat some of the activities at home with your child. If you are unable to attend sessions, I will provide you with verbal or written feedback on sessions.
Treatment sessions are normally once a week lasting up to 45 minutes, in which I provide all the required equipment for an effective therapy session. The number of sessions your child needs will depend on the underlying causes for his difficulties and whether he does the additional exercises that I provide. However, improvements are generally seen after about eight to twelve sessions. Please note that in some cases, such as your child having ongoing therapy needs, I may suggest therapy on a two weekly, monthly or termly basis.
Please get in touch and I will send you some more information on the treatment that I can provide.
