I am a children’s Occupational Therapist with a specialist interest in working with children with Dual or Multiple Exceptionality (DME) or Twice Exceptionality (2e). I qualified in South Africa in 2000 and lived and worked in England from 2001 to 2022. I worked independently from 2012 to 2022 and it is during this time that my passion for helping children with DME or 2e was sparked. I created the DME-C therapy approach specifically for helping children with DME or 2e who were struggling to reach their potential because of sensory processing differences.
To date I have trained over 30 children's Occupational Therapists in the UK in the DME-C approach. In February 2019 I was awarded the "Above and Beyond Inspirational Therapist" Award for my work in this area both in the national and international community.
*** Dual or Multiple Exceptionality or Twice Exceptionality is when children have high learning potential (gifted) together with a special educational need or disability (SEND) or learning difficulty such as sensory processing differences, ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc. If you think that your child may have DME or 2e but you are not sure, then have a look at my FREE parent guide HERE to help you decide. ***
In 2022, my family and I relocated to New South Wales, Australia. As a result I decided to close down my private practice in Milton Keynes, England. However, my determination to help as many children with DME or 2e (and their families!) remains, regardless of where I am in the world. I am in the fortunate position to continue with my work on two levels.
Firstly, I am currently writing a book for other Occupational Therapists in which I share the DME-C therapy approach. Earlier in 2022 I signed a book deal with Routledge, and writing the book is currently my focus whilst we settle into life Down Under. The book is due for release in 2023, so if you are an Occupational Therapist and you would like to follow my progress then please sign up to my newsletter which I send out to parents and professionals on a monthly basis.
Secondly, as some of you may know, I have a few self paced online courses for parents of children with DME or 2e, in how to help their children who have sensory processing differences, cope in real life. At the moment these courses are offline as I need to ensure I comply with Australian rules (which I am still learning about!) before I relaunch them. However, the plan is to relaunch the courses early in 2023, so if you would like to be kept up to date in this regard then please also sign up to my newsletter.
I strongly believe that children will thrive in an environment where everyone involved with them works together. I believe I can change the world one child at a time, and I am taking as many of you on this journey with me as I possibly can!
